CLEVELAND -- Yan Gomes completed a comeback even he doubted was possible.Given little chance to play in the postseason after breaking his right hand last month, Clevelands catcher made the clubs postseason roster and will play in the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox.Its an amazing recovery for Gomes, who was days away from returning to the lineup after missing two months with a separated right shoulder when he was hit was a pitch and broke his hand. Its been a roller coaster of emotions, man, Gomes said Wednesday. I went from sitting in a hospital room with my hand broken, not going to lie, crying my eyes out because Im not going to be part of the team. But then once I got my stuff together, I was like, `Ya know what, I can try to make a comeback, got to play a couple games and to be put on the roster is pretty rewarding for me and Im just going to try to do my best to help our team any way I can.Gomes hand isnt completely healed, but thats not going to stop him now, not with a chance to play in the postseason for the second time in his career.Im just going to tape it as tight as we can and hopefully it stays together, he said. But I can tell you, Im going to give 100 percent every time. When Gomes broke his hand on Sept. 14 while playing for Double-A Akron, it appeared his season was over.Doctors told him it could take up to two months to heal, but after picking up a ball and throwing it, Gomes dedicated himself to doing everything he could to get back on the field.Once I first started throwing the ball around, Im like, if I can flick it without noticing, it doesnt hurt as bad, he said. The only thing was starting to hit. The first time I hit, it didnt feel very good. The second time, I saw some progress. This was three days after. The hand is still broken, theres still going to be some pain, but they told me, `Look, if you can tolerate it, its not going to get any worse. He returned to the lineup in the seasons final week, but only played a few innings in the field. But then, with an at-bat that seemed pulled from the script of a feel-good movie, Gomes connected for a home run on the first pitch he faced Sunday in Kansas City. The shot electrified his teammates, who have been pulling hard for him to get back.Im really happy for him as an individual, Game 1 starter Trevor Bauer said. Obviously hes going to help our team. Theres no question about that. But just on a personal side, to have him be able to come back and be a part of something that he was a big part of all year and over the past couple of years that hes been here, its really great to see for him.Indians manager Terry Francona, who is carrying three catchers on his ALDS roster, isnt sure how much Gomes will play.I dont think its probably fair to ask him to be a starting catcher and catch nine innings, he said. I think what wed usually try to do during the season, and try to do now, is take what the players do well, try to maximize that, which is certainly catching and throwing, knowledge of the staff, so we can use that. Hes not limited there. And we can use that.If it grows into more, that would be good. Jake Elliott Youth Jersey .J. -- Pitcher Carl Pavano is retiring after 14 major league seasons. TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays best chance on Saturday came in the first inning. They had four base runners in the inning -- one on an error and three on walks -- but couldnt score. Having Jose Reyes picked off at first base didnt help. The missed opportunity in the first was basically the game as the Minnesota Twins snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory. Second baseman Brian Dozier drove in four runs -- three on his eighth homer of the season in the seventh -- and right-hander Mike Pelfrey pitched six innings. "We had the pressure on him there and we came up empty, Pelfrey was scattering out there early on and then he settled in," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "We couldnt get anything going thats the bottom line. It was really our only opportunity in the first, and we came up empty." The Twins won at Rogers Centre for the first time since April 3. 2011. They had lost eight of nine games in Toronto dating back to July 7, 2010. Pelfrey (4-6) held the Blue Jays (42-45) to a season-low three hits and three walks in his first outing since June 18 because of a back strain that put him on the disabled list. "Pelf got off to a little bit of a rocky start there with some walks but got going and got on a pretty good run," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He said he just changed his delivery a little bit. He actually got the pitches where he wanted to a little better so maybe that was a good thing." Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey (8-9) allowed seven hits, two walks and six runs in seven innings after winning his two previous starts. "I felt great," Dickey said. "My velocities were there. I gave up another three-run home run, which has kind of been my bane this year -- the home run ball. Thats not ordinary for me. If that slows down I anticipate it being a lot better. But a three-run home run is tough to overcome when youve already given up three. Just try to go back out there and build off of feeling good, and good velocity, and see what happens." Dickey also hit a batter in the sixth inning, left fielder Oswaldo Arcia, who Arcia suffered a bruised hand and left the game for Clete Thomas in the seventh. Pelfrey tweaked his left groin during the start. "Its fine, he pitched through it no problems and hell be fine for his next start," Gardenhire said. "That was in the first," Pelfrey said. "After that, I think my tempo slowed down in the windup with a little pause. I think in the first inning, I didnt have that pause, and I thinkk that was because of the adrenalin.dddddddddddd So I slowed my tempo down and I was a lot more effective." The Twins (37-47) scored three runs in the third. Chris Parmelee led off with a double and took third on Aaron Hicks single. Parmelee was out between third and home in a rundown on Eduardo Escobars comebacker to Dickey. Doziers groundout to second scored one run, Jamey Carrolls double bit the left-field line to score a run and Joe Mauers single made the score 3-0. "I felt pretty good, gave up a couple of hits with runners in scoring position," Dickey said. "Something thats tough about the knuckleball is that you get a wild pitch or a passed ball, and then the next pitch is a groundball and you couldve been out of the inning. "I mean, you have all kinds of scenarios that you have to kind of navigate, but for the most part I was right in my lane, and threw a whole lot of strikes, and try to build off it." Parmelee led off the seventh with a ground-rule double to left centre and Hicks walked. Escobar forced Parmelee at third and Dozier followed with his eighth homer of the season to put the Twins into a 6-0 lead. Dozier has a six-game hitting streak. "I thought Dickey pitched pretty good," Gibbons said. "They threw some hits out there to score those three early, and then he was in control. He got into a little bit of trouble there at the end, then of course that home run ball, thats what happens with those, guaranteed runs. But we didnt score any anyways." Left-hander Caleb Thielbar, right-hander Jared Burton and left-hander Glen Perkins each pitched an inning for the Twins. Left-handers Darren Oliver and Juan Perez each pitched an inning for the Blue Jays.
